Location

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.20.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Maria Alm is a beautiful and picturesque village in Salzburgerland, 5 km from Saalfelden, which has a main line railway station. It is less than an hour’s drive from Salzburg Airport (43 miles – 70 km) and approximately 2 hours drive from Munich airport (108 miles – 173 km). There are train connections form Salzburg, Munich and Innsbruck stations to Saalfeden.

The easiest way to drive from Salzburg Airport is via Lofer and Saalfelden, and from Munich Airport via the A8 Munich to Salzburg motorway, turning off at junction 112 to Inzell then Lofer and Saalfelden.

There is a regular transfer bus service from Salzburg Airport and taxi and bus companies providing services from both Munich and Salzburg. Some village taxi firms will also do transfers on request, you can email Schosswendter and Eder Taxis for more information. We may be able to help you organise some of these.

OTHER PLACES TO VISIT

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.20.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Maria Alm is well placed as a base for touring. Vienna is only four hours drive away, as is northern Italy. Salzburg is an hour’s drive away and Munich two hours away; both are well worth a visit. Much nearer home are the Krimml Falls, Europe’s highest waterfall, the Grossglockner Alpine Road, with its spectacular views leading to the Paterze Glacier and Berchtesgarden National Park (just over the Steinernen Meer, but a one hour drive), where the Keilsteinhaus (Eagles Nest- Hitler’s country retreat) offers magnificent views over Salzburg.

The Salzkammergut, the Austrian Lake District, is about an hour and a half away by car. Named a world heritage site in 1997, this area, and in particular the town of Halstadt, is one of outstanding beauty, even by Austrian standards. There are the world’s largest ice caves at Werfen, near Salzburg,  and lots of interesting towns and villages in Salzbergerland and the neighbouring Tyrol.

MARIA ALM IN SUMMER

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.20.2″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

The climate in the summer is typically mid-continental, with settled spells of warm dry weather with temperatures in the 30’s C, interspersed with the occasional thunderstorm. There is an open air swimming pool with a slide and whirlpool as well as lane swimming, a cafe and bar and tennis courts on the edge of the village, within walking distance. Further afield there is lake swimming at the Ritzensee in Saalfelden (3 miles – 5 km away) as well as a larger open air pool, and lake swimming at Zell am Zee (11 miles – 18 km away) and through Zell there is a large, indoor water park, at Bruck.

There is a wide range of other outdoor activities, with marked mountain trails for walkers and hikers. For the less energetic a number of the ski lifts and gondolas run in the summer, making getting up the mountains easy.  Biking is encouraged with cycle hire shops in the village itself, offering both city bikes and mountain bikes, and Leogang (8 miles – 13 km away) hosted the annual world mountain biking championships in 2012There is a special mountain biking course where instructors will show you the techniques. Again, the less energetic can rent electric bikes, making climbing hills as easy as riding on the flat, and there are various places where these can be recharged whilst you have a cup of coffee or something stronger.

There is a superb golf course on the edge of the village where visitors are welcome, and a number of other first class golf courses in the immediate area (4 within 30 minutes and 10 within an hour’s drive). There is climbing, hang gliding and paragliding (with a local school), horse riding, a summer toboggan run, white water rafting, canyoning, a mile-long zip wire, go-karting and a host of other activities nearby. There is even summer skiing on the Kitzenstein Glacier , about 18 miles (29 km) away through Zell am See.

As well as the mountain restaurants and cafes with outdoor seating areas there are a number in the village itself. There is a village event, music and dancing, every week and a number of other festivals throughout the summer
